Application Process

•   The application must be completed and submitted to the relevant IRCC office for review. Once the application has been confirmed, a notice will be served to the applicant requesting a test for citizenship in Canada.


•   Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 are required to perform the Canadian citizenship test, which assesses the applicant's knowledge of Canadian history, political process, geography, rights and obligations as a Canadian citizen. The IRCC provides a study guide to all applicants for citizenship in Canada.


•   This test usually takes 30 minutes to complete. On the test day, applicants must bring all original documents, including immigration documents, photo ID, a passport, and any other documents related to the applicant's permanent residence permit in Canada.


•   In accordance with the regulations, few applicants are requested to appear for an interview before a citizenship judge. Conversations usually take 15 to 30 minutes in length.


•   Younger children (under 18) are not required to write the test. Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 must provide proof of language proficiency, and applicants must submit one of the following documents:

Results of accredited third party examinations; or A diplomas or transcripts from secondary or postgraduate education in English or French; or Proof of access to the Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher in certain official language programs.

•   Successful applicants must attend a Canadian citizenship event where they can obtain a certificate of citizenship and become new citizens of Canada.
